Mender of Monsters is the sixth book in The Book of Roses series by Kelly River. The story follows Sister Hazel, an infirmarer at Wrenvale Abbey, whose peaceful life is shattered when the notorious Red Roger, a feared barbarian and war criminal, comes to her with a severe head wound. Hazel is bound by her vows to save his life. Despite his brutal past, Hazel finds herself drawn to Roger as her compassion is challenged by the darkness that surrounds him. As she tends to his wounds, she wrestles with haunting questions: Is true redemption possible? As Roger's presence stirs conflict among the nuns and external threats from the scheming of a bishop, Hazel and Roger must overcome all that along with Roger’s comrades. When push comes to shove, Hazel has to do everything in her power to protect the Abbey and Roger. But can she?

Author Kelly River creates a compelling and morally complex story that delves into themes of redemption, compassion, and the nature of evil. The story excels in exploring the gray space between good and evil, challenging both Hazel and the reader to look beyond simple truths. Hazel is a compelling protagonist; she is smart, has a kind heart, and is very intelligent. Her compassion makes her a strong, relatable character. I loved how Roger’s character is layered and given plenty of page space to connect with readers. I enjoyed how he is portrayed not as an image of brutality but as a man shaped by war and regret. The right word to describe the author’s narrative style is evocative. The descriptions of the Abbey, life in the Abbey, and Hazel’s conflicted feelings made the story phenomenal for me. I also enjoyed the relationship between Hazel and Roger; it was familial, the sort of relationship you find between long-lost best friends. Mender of Monsters is a wonderful novel, especially for fans of historical fiction.
