When Santa Was Single: A Cinderella Story for Christmas is a children’s storybook written by Beth Wellington, with illustrations by Yvette Gilbert. The story follows Clarissa, a young woman living in a town near the North Pole. She had an incredible childhood, raised by her father, who taught her to be kind and to believe in magic. After his untimely death, Clarissa is mistreated by her aunt and cousins, but she remains humble and hopeful. One day, the King and Queen announce their annual Winter Ball, where the Prince will select a bride. With the help of her kind neighbor, Mrs. Tangleberry, Clarissa secretly attends the Winter Festival, where she meets the Prince. They fall in love and share a dream of giving gifts to children, ultimately leading to their marriage and the origin of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.
When Santa Was Single is a captivating story that teaches readers the importance of kindness and self-belief. It cleverly combines two well-known tales: the origin of Santa Claus and the classic fairy tale, Cinderella. Beth Wellington creatively intertwines familiar and new characters to bring the story to life. The narrative is imaginative and includes relatable elements that readers will connect with. Clarissa encourages readers to pursue their dreams and believe in the impossible, while the prince is the jolly gift-giver, Santa, who teaches us the importance of giving and helping those in need. The vibrant illustrations narrate the story visually. They remind me of traditional fairy tale art but also present a modern vibe. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it offers valuable lessons about kindness, self-belief, and generosity.
