Tales From The Red Planet: Part 1 by Chris Cleveland is a gritty, multi-threaded science fiction epic set on Mars, where survival is just the beginning. We find ourselves on the red planet as it pushes various colonists to their limits through sudden death, ancient microbial threats, and rising political unrest, igniting a powder keg through interconnected stories. From secretive corporations to rebel factions and desperate scientists, every action reverberates through a fragile colony teetering on collapse. With Earth’s support wavering and Mars itself proving hostile, humanity’s foothold depends on trust, courage, and the will to endure in a world that gives nothing back.

Author Chris Cleveland has taken the colonization sub-genre and done something truly unique with it in terms of his storytelling, creating a thrilling and richly textured portrayal of survival and betrayal on Mars that deals with the practical, emotional, and psychological realities of what it might be like to live there. Everything is believable in the narrative, with realistic dialogue and descriptive, emotive actions of those in a brutal world where every choice counts, and survival is an imperative stress in every moment. I especially enjoyed the part titled ‘Deep South’ as I found myself very invested in the reluctant Erzsok’s journey and loved the atmospheric descriptions and language choices in her adventure. The prose keeps track of events confidently and clearly, and Cleveland’s intricate plotting and grounded science make this an immersive ride for serious sci-fi fans that explores the inner struggles of humanity forging a future just as much as it explores the possibilities of life in space. Overall, Tales From The Red Planet: Part 1 is a brilliant piece of hard science fiction that delivers everything it promises, and I can’t wait to read more from this uniquely framed series.

People are fundamentally the same, regardless of the planet they inhabit, and Tales From The Red Planet: Part 1 by Chris Cleveland emphasizes this idea. In the year 2080, 16 humans have landed on Mars, with some planning to stay permanently. Seven years later, the population has grown to 1,500 as they struggle to make this harsh and inhospitable world livable. However, the planet is not the only challenge the colonists face. The agency responsible for colonization frequently endangers lives through shortcuts, cover-ups, and outright lies. For the colonists, particularly those who intend to remain on Mars permanently and are often treated as mere cargo by those on Earth, Mars represents a new frontier. As the years pass, these individuals create a shared history shaped by their unique experiences, and when history is born, a new nation is not far behind.

Realistic science fiction and a captivating tale spanning decades define Tales From The Red Planet: Part One by Chris Cleveland. Multiple plots are woven together through chapters that read like interconnected stories from an anthology, presenting an imagined history of humanity's attempt to embrace the space age. Like the many plots, there are numerous themes throughout the novel, with the most prominent being the cultural and sociological evolution shaped by the environment, while also serving as a reminder that when authority controls history, truth is often buried. Strong character development is highlighted by a uniquely diverse and fascinating cast featuring many individuals who could be someone you know. The pace is akin to a sustained simmering boil, with the final chapters heating up and blowing the lid off the pot. Combined with plausible world-building and a very believable premise, Tales From The Red Planet is a delight for fans of hard sci-fi.

Tales From the Red Planet: Part 1 is a human-centered science fiction narrative authored by Chris Cleveland, with editorial and creative contributions from Dan Myers, Sean Leonard, Maxim Mitenkov, Claire Smith, and Lorna Reid. This collaborative effort results in a multi-layered story that blends speculative science, humor, and appreciation for the human condition in the context of Mars colonization. The story moves fluidly between timelines, beginning with a witty and reflective prologue on Mars’ geological and mythological history. From there, readers are introduced to Rudy Faber, a construction engineer whose journey from Earth to Mars spans decades. Rudy’s early escapades, including a humorous subplot involving the Voyager space probe, ground the narrative in a lighthearted yet poignant critique of bureaucracy and ambition. His later life on Mars reflects the grit and grace required to help build a new world.

The narrative captures the monumental challenge of extraterrestrial colonization while never losing sight of the personal stories that give it heart. Each chapter, whether focused on early space exploration or the daily realities of Martian settlement, contributes to a larger portrait of human perseverance. Maxim Mitenkov’s cover art and Claire Smith’s typography frame the book beautifully, while Lorna Reid’s interior design provides clarity and flow. Dan Myers and Sean Leonard’s editing ensures consistency in tone and pacing, supporting Chris Cleveland’s unique voice. From technical details about habitat pressure and regolith treatment to lyrical descriptions of Martian dawns, Tales From the Red Planet: Part 1 delivers a fully immersive read. It is a story about building structures in another world, relationships, legacy, and meaning.
